Grevillea represents a genus comprising about 360 species of evergreen flowering plants belonging to the protea family. The species originate from Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, and Sulawesi; they are commonly known as Spider Flower, Silky-oak and Toothbrush.
The genus got its name after Charles Francis Greville, who was an antiquarian and collector from Britain. The species vary from small shrubs in the length upto 50 cm to large trees, attaining the height up to 35 m.
A lot of species have been in cultivation for their noticeable foliage and attractive blossoms, they have been immensely hybridized. Today one can enjoy numerous Grevillea cultivars.
Grevillea blooms were popular among Aborigines who valued them for their sweet nectar. They made a tasty drink from it.
