Lily of the Incas


Lily of the Incas is an attractive plant that is widely used in nosegays and other floral arrangements. Being cut they may live about two weeks.

For those who are going to grow this plant in the garden is very useful to know that Lily of the Incas is not an evergreen plant. It is better to grow it in the rock garden. It is very popular among people by its resemblance with a small lily. For its thriving in spring it is necessary to fertilize it with granular fertilizer every 3-4 months. Optionally one can use a liquid fertilizer every 20-25 days.

To keep the plant healthy it is better to put it in a place where he'll get at least a couple of hours of direct sunlight. One should not be afraid if during winter or autumn seasons the aerial part of the plant is dry, the plant will in spring.

The Lily of Incas should be watered not too often, it is necessary to wet the soil with about three glasses of water once a week.

Dendrobium Orchid

Till today there are more than thousand familiar species of Dendrobium. The more ones are being discovered. Being a part of the Orchidaceae family the majority of species is native to Asia and the South Pacific area. The name, of this plant is derived from two Greek words- dendron, meaning, "tree," and bios, meaning "life."

The alternative name of Dendrobium Orchid is the Singapore Orchid. The flower usually is a spray of 10-12 tender blossoms borne on slender stem; it is usually available in daffodil-like shape and creamy white, bright magenta purple, pink, green, red colors.

Earlier Dendrobium orchids were thought to be exotic and outstanding plants. Nowadays they can be much more widely available. They bring into the house charm, glamour and elegance.

The flowers are available any season of the year. If they are cut out they may last for 7-14 days.

Being elegant line flowers they are often used by florist all over the world. Dendrobium Orchid matches modern line arrangements and sympathy arrangements as well.

Allium

Allium is a large genus of bulbous, onion- or garlic-scented and tasted herbs. A strong onion- odor is the recognizable characteristics of the entire genus, but not all species are equally flavorful.

It counts approximately of 1250 species, thus, being one of the biggest plant genera worldwide. Allium belongs to Alliaceae family with its species that can be met in all parts of the globe with exception of the tropics, New Zealand and Australia.

Due to the vast variety of species the plants’ may be from 5 cm to 150 cm tall. Their flowers form an umbel at the top of a leafless stalk. The flowers may be of different shades and colors. Depending on the species the size of bulbs may be quite small with 2–3 mm in diameter and rather big with8–10 cm.

The majority of members are used as food components; however some species are even cultivated to serve as floral decorative border plants.


Allium as a Food

Having about 1250 species Allium includes a lot of ornamental and food plants. Among popular food plants of Allium are such vegetables as onions, leeks, shallots and herbs of garlic and chives. The majority of people who have their own kitchen-gardens grow onions and leeks, garlic, shallots and chives.

Some of humans even may like to grow garlic chives, tree onions, and everlasting onions, welsh onions and the like. All the above-mentioned vegetables, herbs and many others make up the genus Allius having an important place in the food garden.

Distinguished by their bright and colorful flowers along with "architectural" characteristics some Allium members are widely cultivated and utilized as border and ornamental plants. Such plants can be met in the flower gardens as well.

Thus, for this purpose some Allium hybrids have been bred with flowers of various shades purple color. The well known hybrid is called Allium hollandicum; it is commonly known as ‘Purple Sensation'. The breeders of this plant have got an Award of Garden Merit.

Flannel Flower - Actinotus

Actinotus represents a small genus of nearly 20 species mainly found in Australia with 2 - 3 growing in New Zealand. Actinotus helianthi is the one among the famous genera members, which has been cultivated for a lot of years. 

Its common name is Flannel flower or Sydney flannel flower as it is a spring delight to behold in Sydney, Australia bush land. 

It is an herbaceous shrub that attains the height up to 1,5 m in the best growth conditions; however it is usually less than 1 m tall. It produces grey, velvet-like foliage with deep lobes.

Flannel flower bears small blooms; they are borne in clusters with velvety bracts that surround them.  The bracts come from cream to white. The overall shape of each blossom head resembles a daisy, though it has not relation to it.

The Flannel Flower represents the emblem of the Tasmanian Mental Health Council being worn as a brooch on the Left Coat Lapel.

American Persimmon

American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is famous by a lot of names; among them are common persimmon and possumwood. The plant can be found in the southeastern America. Growing wild it has been in cultivation for its edible fruit and wood by Native Americans.

Diospyros virginiana is capable to attain the height up to 20 meters. In summer season it bears aromatic, bell-like flowers in creamy-yellow color. American Persimmon can produce the fruit only after 6 years of its life. Ancient Greek called the tree’s fruit as 'the Fruit of the Gods'.

These tasty golden-orange fruits frequently hang on the tree after the foliage die off in the fall. By the way, one can come across a rare natural form of the species bearing darker fruit, nearly black. This form is known under the name Diospyros virginiana atra. The ripe fruit have sweet taste; that is why they are used in desserts and cuisine.

In addition to the fruit-producing capability, American Persimmon is a perfect middle-sized yard tree.

Grevillea

Grevillea represents a genus comprising about 360 species of evergreen flowering plants belonging to the protea family. The species originate from Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, and Sulawesi; they are commonly known as Spider Flower, Silky-oak and Toothbrush.

The genus got its name after Charles Francis Greville, who was an antiquarian and collector from Britain. The species vary from small shrubs in the length upto 50 cm to large trees, attaining the height up to 35 m.

A lot of species have been in cultivation for their noticeable foliage and attractive blossoms, they have been immensely hybridized.  Today one can enjoy numerous Grevillea cultivars.

Grevillea blooms were popular among Aborigines who valued them for their sweet nectar. They made a tasty drink from it.

Lemon Mint

Lemon mint is the common name of the plant that is botanically known as Monarda citriodora. Representing the min family it bears alternative names of Purple horse mint or Lemon beebalm.

The plant is noted by its citrus scent when broken and showy purple blooms that attract bees and hummingbirds. Sometimes, particularly late in the summer season, the lemon mint's aroma resembles oregano more than lemon.

It thrives in prairies, along road sides and other sunny locations from California to Florida, and from Nebraska to Texas. Namely in these places one can enjoy the plant’s outstanding blankets of summer blossoms.

Lemon mint is sometimes used for making various kinds of the herbal teas.
